A Simple Favor, 2018 – 2.5/5

A movie that starts as one thing then twists into another then twists again I to something else by the end.

It’s an alright sort of thriller I guess but after laying on with so many layers of doubt and twits it got a little boring by the end. Also, I like Anna Kendrick but I feel like she works better with more sarcastic comedy material to work with.

The Foreigner, 2017 – 3.5/5

A straight forward political thriller about a man (Jackie Chan) out for revenge for the death of his daughter at the hands of the IRA.

Chan is a mysterious nobody with a dark past who inadvertently gets caught up in a bombing plot and works to track down the killers. The action is much more quick and not as flashy as you might expect from Jackie Chan, but he isn’t as young as he used to be and is convincing in the role. Pierce Brosnan plays the head of the IRA, who is also working to find out who has betrayed him from within his organization.

It’s a decent film all around, though nothing exceptionally amazing in any one category.

Shazam!, 2019 – 4/5

Quite a bit different than the grimdark world that is the DCCU. It definitely takes place in the world of the Justice League though, it’s got quite a few references thrown in.

The basic plot and concept is a lot more fun and Shazam (Captain Marvel, no, the other one) is a nice departure from your usual super hero. The villain is kind of neat but feels a little one dimensionally evil. There are a lot of nice underlying themes about what it means to be a family.

It’s definitely one of the better DCCU films.
